Gum Disease (Periodontal Disease)

There are many terms around Gum Disease that you may have heard. Gum disease, periodontal disease, gingivitis, peridontis, plaque, and more. What do these terms mean? What can you do? What can our office and Dr. Pak do?

Many adults living around you currently have some form of gum disease.

Gum disease occurs most often by improper oral hygiene. Bacteria is all over our mouths. This bacteria, along with mucus and calcium, constantly forms a sticky "plaque" on our teeth. Brushing and flossing help get rid of this plaque. Whether the patient is not cleaning their teeth well or are missing dental appointments, if bacteria, plaque and calculus remain on the teeth, they will infect the gums. There are other conditions that can cause gum disease, pregnancy, hormone changes, stress, smoking tobacco and nutrition are all other factors for gum disease causes.

Gingivitis is the start of gum disease. This means you have plaque on your teeth that is not getting brushed away. This plaque is a bacteria haven. As the bacteria thrives, it will irritate your gums and is often the cause of bad breath. With time that plaque then hardens. Hardened plaque is referred to as calculus. When this calculus forms below the gum line, it is now harder for you to repair at home.

Symptoms of Gingivitis:

•  Red, swollen gums.
•  Gums that are painful to the touch.
•  Bleeding gums.
•  Gums that bleed after brushing or flossing.
•  Bad breath (also known as halitosis).

How do I fix Gingivitis?

Gingivitis is very curable and reversible. Quite simply, you need to take care of the infection. You do this with proper care and cleaning. Daily brushing and flossing, along with your regular dental cleanings, will fix gum disease.

Periodontal Disease

Periodontal Disease is the escalated form of Gingivitis. When gingivitis is not treated, it advances to periodontitis, which means inflammation around the tooth. In periodontitis, the gums pull away from the teeth and form spaces, called pockets, that can become infected. The infection can now continue to the bone and causing inflammation around the bone. There are several stages of Periodontal Disease. Ranging from chronic to aggressive to worse.
