Composite Fillings

Dentist Dr. Pak performing composite filling procedure.Composite fillings are our preferred treatment of cavities at Sammy BD Pak, DDS. Family Dentistry. Using a composite of tooth-colored blend of glass or quartz and plastic resin, this mixture will blend in with the remaining natural part of the tooth. Many years ago this composite was not thought to be a strong option, but the materials have been updated, and strengthened. Dentists now agree that this is a great option for fillings of front and back teeth.

These Composite fillings provide durability and are resistant to fracture in small-to-mid size dental restorations that need to withstand moderate chewing pressure. Using this composite allows us to remove less tooth structure when Dr. Pak prepares the tooth. This may result in a smaller filling than with of an amalgam.

What does getting a composite filling involve?

First, Dr. Pak will answer any questions you have. After anesthetic is given to the tooth requiring the composite filling, Dr. Pak will thoroughly remove any decay that is present. Preparation of the tooth will require the tooth to be clean and dry to successfully bond with the composite material. Using a blue light the composite material will turn from soft to hard and durable.

Attaching Composite Fillings

Composites are bonded to the tooth, allowing us to remove less of the natural tooth for repair. During the filling process, we need to keep the tooth clean and dry and they are subject to stain and discoloration over time. The life expectancy of a white filling varies greatly on where it is in your mouth and how heavy your bite is in that area.

We commonly use Composite filling material to repair front teeth that have chipped or worn. Where possible, composite material to front teeth is generally much less expensive than veneers or crowns though it does not last as long.

Reasons For Composite Fillings

•  Restores cavities that do not require a crown.
•  Restore a chipped or worn anterior (front) tooth.

Advantages of Composite Fillings

•  With its tooth color, Composite fillings restore the natural appearance of the tooth.
•  Composite fillings offer you most of the original strength of the tooth.
•  Composites require less removal of tooth structure. Dr. Pak is able to drill much less of your natural tooth away when using composite versus amalgam.
•  Teeth that have been restored with composite fillings are less sensitive to hot and cold than teeth restored with amalgam.
•  Composites are mercury free.

After your composite filling is installed.

The tooth may be sensitive for a little while, but if it persists over a week it is important to call our office in Puyallup, WA so we can examine to tooth and determine if additional service is needed.
